Past continuous tense – The past continuous or past progressive tense is used to indicate that an action was happening or going on at some point in time in the past – past meaning it came to an end. This tense is formed by combining the auxiliary verb ‘to be’ in past (was, were) with the verb’s present participle ending in ‘–ing’.

When the past continuous is combined with the verb ‘used to’ in a sentence, it helps to further clarify that the action which was going on is no longer true or the case.
